The art of building a great team

Building a great team is not easy.
In both sports and business, we occasionally encounter teams that just click.
Their actions seem to blend seamlessly, and they tackle tasks with a natural grace. Everything they do appears so easy and effortless.
On the other hand there are teams that struggle, and when you observe them, it feels like they're not aligned with a common objective.
It almost seems like they're working against each other, with conflicting goals, and instead of collaborating to complete tasks, they end up interfering with each other's projects.
On top of that they can’t stop fighting each other.

What is it that makes a good team?

Complemente personalities

Just because you gather 10 top-notch individuals doesn't mean success is a sure thing. Think about those sports teams filled with superstars that still don't win. Why does that happen, even when each person is excellent at their role?
Egos get involved!

In a fantastic team, reaching the shared goal is what truly matters.
This can only be achieved when everyone sets their egos aside.
To make this happen, it's important to create a team where diverse personalities work well together.

"Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.”

Michael Jordan

Imagine this: having ten strong-willed leaders in one team might not lead to the smoothest collaboration. However, it's important to have a few folks ready to step up and guide the way. That's why having a leader is essential.
Team members don’t have to like each other but a general understanding is essential.

Putting personalities together that complement each other is important but it is not the only thing that matters.

What is important?

  1. Aligned goals

  2. Personalities

  3. Complementing skills

  4. Encourage risk taking

Aligned goals:
Why do we form teams? It's because there's a goal that can't be achieved by just one person. In a team, it's sometimes necessary to set aside personal interests to concentrate on the bigger picture.
To make this work, it's crucial that everyone is on the same page.
If some team members have different objectives, they'll likely focus on their own agendas, which won't help the team as a whole.
That's why aligning the team's goals is so important.

Personalities:
Remember, having ten alpha leaders in a team is like asking for trouble—conflicts are bound to happen! The same idea applies to having a team full of creative minds who love to make things complex. While these folks are essential, a team made up entirely of them might not be the most productive.
Finding different personalities that work well together is not negotiable.

Complementing skills:
To tackle any challenge, it's essential to have a diverse group of thinkers, doers, and creative minds. Building a team isn't just about managing the workload.
It's about recognizing that no one can excel at everything.
Each person contributes unique strengths, and becoming an expert in one area requires dedication and focus. If you pour your energy into mastering one skill, you won't have the capacity or time to master another.
So, when assembling your team, seek out individuals with varied skills.
This approach ensures that together, you can conquer any obstacle.

Encourage risk taking:
The final tip isn't about what to consider when picking team members.
Instead, it's about letting them have the freedom to make certain decisions.
Playing it safe never led to anything extraordinary.
Encourage your team to take risks, and they'll be less afraid of failing. That's the mindset you need if you're aiming for real change.

In conclusion

Achieving something truly remarkable on your own can be quite challenging.
That's why we form teams! When a group of people comes together, each bringing their unique skills and expertise, reaching a specific goal becomes much easier.
However, whenever people collaborate, egos can come into play, and if you're not careful in selecting each team member, conflicts might arise.
Occasionally, team members might even interfere with each other's work, which is definitely not ideal.

In any collaborative setting, it's absolutely essential to ensure that everyone involved is aligned with the overarching goals and objectives. This means taking the time to clearly communicate these goals and ensuring that each team member understands their role in achieving them. Additionally, it's important to recognize that the success of a team is not just about shared goals, but also about the harmonious integration of diverse skills and personalities. When team members' skills complement each other and their personalities mesh well, it creates a dynamic and productive environment.

Moreover, fostering a culture that encourages individuals to take calculated risks is the way how extraordinary results happen.
